Former Snohomish County Executive, Bob Drewel will serve as Chair of the recently established Everett Symphony Advisory Council. The council is to be made up of a wide range of community leaders, musicians, music educators, arts producers, donors, patrons, and other interested community members. It is expected about one hundred community members will be invited to serve on the Advisory Council. The purpose of the Council is to help the Symphony better align itself with community needs and to help the Everett Symphony Board of Directors develop a self-sustaining business plan. The Council's work will be to react, refine, and prioritize ideas brought forward during a series of Community Music Summits that are being planned for the Spring. "I'm pleased to play a part in the revival of an incredible community asset," says Drewel. Drewel is a former member of the Symphony Board of Directors.
"The Everett Symphony Orchestra is confronting some hard realities. Though there is a small group of people who enjoy our concerts, we have failed to effectively identify and meet the needs of our community. We feel like we have lost touch with our community and supporters. Our financial problems go back over a decade. Our decisions to keep the music going no-matter-what have caught up with us and our problems are now accentuated by the bad economy. As a result, our community has gradually withdrawn its support. We want to change this. We need to change this. The Advisory Council will give us the input and guidance we need as respected members of the community we serve," says Myrna Overstreet, Everett Symphony Board President.
Financial problems forced the Symphony to finish the 2009-2010 season prematurely on January 29. This was part of the Board of Director's decision to "wipe the slate clean." They eliminated nine years of accumulated debt, made deep and painful cuts to reduce overhead costs and payrolls, and are moving the Symphony out of its expensive downtown headquarters building. Unfortunately, to do so also required the painful decision to draw down the Symphony's million dollar endowment by half.
"Advisory Council members do not have to love symphonic music to help," says Overstreet. "They just need to love the Greater Everett Community and appreciate how important a strong, vibrant performing arts climate, which includes the Everett Symphony Orchestra, is to the community."
